Does Time Only Happen Once?:
poster collage
In contemplating & exploring questions that a typewriter would ask a clock (because, why not), I designed a poster collage using analog materials, with the central question and title “Does Time Only Happen Once?”
I was drawn to the way that the scan muffled the crispness of the image as the crease prevented the book from being fully flattened — similar to the way our memories tend to get blurred with the passage of time.
I also scanned particularly time-related pages from Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five, and then I made copies of copies of these scanned copies, until they became grainy and disintegrated — again, much like our memories. Photos of photos echo this idea, and layered scrapbooking elements show how complicated our memories — stories captured in time — can be.
In addition to the printed scans, I also used India ink, Instax film, and scrapbook materials, including a googly eye.
I folded and smushed the copies of the scans, ripped out phrases that spoke to me in conversation with this exploration of “Does time only happen once?” The singular eye peeking out between these twisted pages symbolizes “re-vision,” essentially what happens when we revisit a memory.
